Dont Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala.

Synopsis on the back of the book:

“Joy Delamere is suffocating.

From asthma, from her parents, and from her boyfriend, Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out. She can take his cruel words, his tender words.. Until the night they go to far. To escape, Joy sacrifices her suburban life to find the one who offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. He introduces her to a world of fierce loyalty, to its rules of survival, and to love- a world she won’t easily let go. Set against the backdrop of the streets of Seattle, Holly Cupala’s powerful new novel explores the subtleties of abuse, the secrets we keep, and the way to redemption. But above all, it is an unflinching story about the extraordinary lengths one girl will go to discover her own strength.”

An amazing book that I recently read. Its one of those books that make you stop and think. That being said, its also a pretty “heavy” book dealing and touching on problems most wouldn’t want to think about. So its not something I recommend to younger kids.

The reason I choose to read this book in the first place was because it was based in Seattle, my home. I picked up, read through it, got halfway and stopped. Not because I wanted to, because I had. Through this book, I saw a different portrait of Seattle that I never imagined. I had to stop and think. How is it that I’m growing up here and didn’t know about this darker side? While it is a book and how much can be taken as reality can be debated, I still think it could be close to what the homeless scene in Seattle is. After stopping to think, I picked the book back up and finished the remaining half. I felt those kids emotions, and cried for them. A must read book for anyone.
